Rules & Safety

Keeping our athletes safe is our number one goal. The following rules and safety guidelines will keep their experiences with lacrosse safe, positive, and rewarding.

General Safety

Coaching Staff

All coaches for Islip Youth Lacrosse are required to:

  • Complete an annual background check
    • USA Lacrosse or traditional background check
  • Complete USA Lacrosse training programs to maintain a Bronze Level certification (Boys Division only)

Islip Youth Lacrosse, through Nassau/Suffolk PAL strongly encourages our coaches to participate in the annual PAL sponsored CPR/AED trainings.

AEDs -Automated External Defibrillator

Islip Youth Lacrosse has 2 AEDs: one for the boys division and one for the girls division.

At every home game, Islip Youth Lacrosse will have an AED on the sidelines.

Boys Division

Rules Overview

Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd Grades

  • Kindergarteners - exceptional kindergarteners may play up with 1st graders, but in no circumstances can a kindergartener play on a team with 2nd graders
  • This division is a teaching division focusing on "game like" situations
  • Games will have 2 junior and/or 2 Certified Officials per game
  • Games are four 12-minute running quarters
  • Games are played on a modified field (90 x 45 yards is ideal)
  • 8v8 play (coaches can agree to 10v10)
    • 2x Attack
    • 3x Mid-field
    • 2x Defense
    • 1x Goalie
  • Stick length 35-42 inches - NO LONG POLES

3rd through 8th Grades

  • Games are four 12-minute running quarters - stoppage on the whistle in last 2 minutes of the game if spread is two or less
  • No one-handed checking - a slash will be called regardless of body contact
  • Any contact between the crosse and a child's helmet is a penalty
  • Body checking is legal only against the player in possession of the ball
  • Stick length 34-42 inches / long poles 52-72 inches
    • No long poles in 3rd & 4th grades
    • 5th & 6th - maximum of 3 long poles on the field at a time
    • 7th & 8th - teams may have up to 4 long poles on the field

Gear Requirements

Field Players

  • Protective Helmet designed for lacrosse and meets NOCSAE standards
  • Mouthguard
  • Protective Gloves
  • Arm Pads
  • Athletic Cup / Jockstrap
  • Shoulder pads which must be NOCSAE approved to protect against Commotio Cordis
    • Optional for goalkeeper if Chest protector has them built in
  • Cleats with plastic bottoms. Cannot have metal cleats.
  • Lacrosse stick (appropriate to position assigned)

Goalies

  • Protective Helmet designed for lacrosse and meets NOCSAE standards
  • Mouthguard
  • Throat Protection
  • Protective Gloves (with thumb protection recommended)
  • Arm Pads
  • Athletic Cup / Jockstrap
  • Goalie Chest Protector which must be NOCSAE approved against Commotio Cordis
  • Shin Guards (K-6)
  • Other protective pants (Optional)

Girls Division

Rules Overview

K-1 Clinic

  • Clinic style meets:
    • 40 minutes skills stations focusing on ground balls, passing, shooting, & dodging
    • One 15-20 minute game
    • One coach on the field during game
  • 7v7 with no goalies
  • Games should be played on a modified field - short sided
  • 2 passes required before shooting on goal - passes do not need to be caught
  • Kindergarten and 1st graders only - no older players

2nd through 8th Grades

  • 2nd & 3rd Grade
    • 8v8 with 2 players from each team remaining behind the restraining line at all times
    • Four 12-minute quarters
    • Players can go to goal, after a 3-goal lead, players must attempt 2 passes (3rd Graders must complete one of the 2 attempts) before going to goal
    • NO STICK CHECKING
  • 4th Grade
    • 10v10 with 3 players from each team remaining behind the restraining line at all times
    • Four 12-minute quarters
    • Players can go to goal, after a 3-goal lead, players must attempt 2 passes (must complete one of the 2 attempts) before going to goal
    • NO STICK CHECKING
  • 5th through 8th Grades
    • 12v12 with 4 players from each team remaining behind the restraining line at all times
    • Two 25-minute halves
    • Players can go to goal, after a 3-goal lead, players must complete 1 pass in the offensive restraining area before going to goal
      • 6th grade and up have no pass requirements when up by 3 or more goals
    • Modified stick checking is allowed: stick checks must be away from the body and in a downward motion
